Enter your birth details to find your North Node and South Node: the sign and degree of each, plus the house if you know your birth time. The calculation uses the true node. Each result comes with a short reading you can use as a starting point for reflection.
There is no sign-up and no email field. We never send your birth date and time to our servers.
How to use the North Node calculator
- Enter your date of birth.
- Add your birth time if you know it. Without it you still get the node sign and degree, but no house.
- Type your birthplace and pick the right town from the list.
- Read your North Node and South Node positions, then the short reading for each.
What are the lunar nodes?
The Moon's orbit is tilted about five degrees against the ecliptic, the path the Sun appears to follow across the sky over a year. The two paths cross at two points. Where the Moon crosses going north is the North Node; where it crosses going south is the South Node.
The nodes are geometric points with no body to see, yet they have a visible effect: eclipses happen only when a new or full Moon falls close to one of them. In Western astrology the pair is read as a line between two sets of qualities, ones that come easily and ones that take practice.
North Node and South Node
The two nodes always sit exactly opposite each other. If your North Node is at 12 degrees Leo, your South Node is at 12 degrees Aquarius, and when your birth time is known they fall in opposite houses as well.
Most astrologers read the South Node as familiar ground: habits and skills that come easily, sometimes too easily. The North Node stands for the less comfortable direction, qualities that take effort and can feel awkward at first. It helps to picture the pair as two ends of one line. Most people move back and forth along it throughout their lives.
True node and mean node
There are two ways to calculate the nodes. The mean node averages out the Moon's orbit and moves backward through the zodiac at a steady three minutes of arc per day. The true node follows the Moon's actual orbit, which wobbles under the pull of the Sun, so it speeds up, slows down and now and then moves forward for a short time.
The two positions stay within about two degrees of each other. The gap only matters when the node sits near the edge of a sign, where the two methods can disagree about the sign. This calculator uses the true node. If another site shows a different sign, check whether it uses the mean node.
Why people your age often share your node sign
The nodes take about 18.6 years to travel backward through all twelve signs, which works out to around 18 or 19 months in each. Everyone born within the same year and a half or so shares a North Node sign. That is why classmates often have the same one, and why the sign on its own says more about a generation than about you.
The nodes also come back to their birth positions every 18.6 years or so, around ages 18 or 19, 37, 56 and 74. Some people treat those years as checkpoints for looking back at how they have changed.
Why the house needs your birth time
The node's sign depends only on your birth date, unless the node changed signs that day. The house depends on the time and place, because houses come from how the sky was turning above your birthplace at a given hour. The house is often the more personal part of the reading. A North Node in the 4th house points toward home and family, in the 7th toward close partnerships, in the 10th toward work and public life.
If you don't know your birth time, we show the sign and degree only and leave the house out.
Using your result for self-reflection
Read the South Node description first and see what you recognize: the strengths you fall back on, the role you slip into under stress. Then read the North Node description and notice your reaction. Discomfort is useful information here.
Some questions to try. Which North Node qualities do you admire in other people but hesitate to show yourself? Where could you practice one of them this week in a small, low-stakes way? Which South Node strengths are still worth keeping? Most astrologers treat the South Node as a base to build from, so the aim is a better balance between the two ends.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between the North Node and the South Node?
They are the two points where the Moon's orbit crosses the ecliptic, always exactly opposite each other. In astrology the South Node describes familiar habits and strengths, and the North Node describes qualities that take more effort to develop.
Does this calculator use the true node or the mean node?
The true node. The mean node is an averaged position and can differ by up to about two degrees. If another site gives you a different sign, it is probably using the mean node, and your node is near the edge of a sign.
Why do my friends have the same North Node sign as me?
The nodes spend about 18 or 19 months in each sign, so people born within the same year and a half or so usually share a node sign. The degree and the house are what make it specific to you.
Do I need my birth time to find my North Node?
Not for the sign and degree, which depend on the date. You do need it for the house, which depends on the exact time and place of birth.
My North Node is marked retrograde. What does that mean?
Very little on its own. The nodes normally move backward through the zodiac, so retrograde is their usual state. The true node occasionally moves forward for short periods, and most astrologers read it the same way in either case.
Is the North Node my life purpose?
Some astrologers describe it that way. We treat it more modestly, as a set of qualities you may find worth developing. What you do with them is up to you.
Can I see the rest of my birth chart?
Yes. The birth chart calculator on our home page uses the same calculations and shows the Sun, Moon, planets, houses and nodes together.
Can I save my chart?
Yes. You can save it in this browser, and it stays on this device. Nothing is uploaded, and we never see your saved charts. If you switch to another device, export your saved charts to a file and import it on the new one. Clearing your browser's site data deletes them, so an exported file doubles as a backup.
The North and South Node in each sign
Aries
North Node in Aries
A North Node in Aries points toward acting on your own behalf. The qualities to grow into are directness, courage and deciding without first polling everyone around you. Asking plainly for what you want, starting something on your own or letting someone be disappointed in you may feel unnatural at first. Try one small experiment: make a choice purely on your own preference this week and notice what happens to your mood.
South Node in Aries
South Node in Aries describes an old, familiar talent for independence and quick action. You may be used to handling things alone, moving first and fighting your own battles, and that self-reliance is a real skill. The opposite North Node in Libra pulls toward cooperation. Ask yourself when going it alone is a choice and when it is only a habit, and what shifts when you let someone in.
Taurus
North Node in Taurus
North Node in Taurus is about slowing down and building something steady. That can mean trusting simple pleasures, staying on one path long enough to see it grow, and measuring your worth by your own values. If intensity and upheaval feel like home, calm may seem almost boring at first. Notice what helps you feel settled, then protect it on purpose.
South Node in Taurus
A South Node in Taurus suggests comfort with stability, patience and practical skill. You may know how to make a situation secure and keep it that way for a long time. The catch is holding on to routines, possessions or opinions after they have stopped helping you. Across the axis, the North Node in Scorpio asks what you could gain by letting something change, or by sharing more deeply with someone you trust.
Gemini
North Node in Gemini
North Node in Gemini points toward curiosity, listening and the small exchanges of everyday life. The work here is asking questions instead of supplying answers, keeping more than one point of view in play, and learning from neighbors, siblings or a stranger on the bus. If you tend to speak from big convictions, try holding them a little more loosely and collecting the details first.
South Node in Gemini
South Node in Gemini brings a familiar ease with information, conversation and quick thinking. Collecting facts, adapting to different people and keeping many threads going may all come naturally. That versatility is valuable. The North Node in Sagittarius invites a commitment to something larger: deciding what you actually believe, following one big question further, and trusting your own sense of meaning over the latest piece of input.
Cancer
North Node in Cancer
A North Node in Cancer turns attention toward feelings, home and the people who make you feel safe. If achievement and self-control come easily to you, the less familiar work is admitting needs, accepting care and keeping a private life that isn't measured by results. A simple place to start is an unscheduled evening spent with people who knew you before your job title did.
South Node in Cancer
Nurturing and creating emotional safety are familiar ground for a South Node in Cancer. Looking after others, staying close to family and retreating to what you know when things get hard may be close to reflex. With the North Node in Capricorn, the reflection points outward. Where could you take on a public responsibility, set a goal measured in years, or trust yourself to lead beyond familiar walls?
Leo
North Node in Leo
North Node in Leo is about personal expression and being seen. That might mean sharing your own work, taking the stage, enjoying play, or letting yourself be the center of attention now and then. If blending into a group feels safest, standing out can feel exposed. Start small: put your name on something you made, or say out loud which idea was yours.
South Node in Leo
A South Node in Leo suggests long familiarity with creativity, self-expression and being noticed. Leading with warmth and personal flair may come naturally to you. Opposite, the North Node in Aquarius turns the question toward the group. How could your talents serve a community, a team or a cause, and what might you gain from being one voice among many instead of the main one?
Virgo
North Node in Virgo
For a North Node in Virgo, the growth edge is practical. If you drift easily into daydreams or into other people's moods, structure may be the thing to practice: finishing tasks, keeping a schedule, being helpful in concrete ways. Pick one daily habit and keep it for a month. The steadiness itself is part of the point, more than any single result.
South Node in Virgo
Analysis, service and getting things right are well-practiced skills with a South Node in Virgo. Fixing, checking and improving may be second nature, sometimes to the point of constant worry. The North Node in Pisces invites you to loosen your grip a little: trust intuition, allow imperfection, and make room for rest, art or an afternoon with no plan at all.
Libra
North Node in Libra
North Node in Libra makes partnership and cooperation the focus. If you are used to doing things alone and quickly, the stretch is asking for input, finding compromises, and considering how your choices land with other people. Relationships become the place to practice patience and fairness. Try making one decision this month together with someone, instead of announcing it once it is made.
South Node in Libra
A South Node in Libra suggests practiced strengths in diplomacy, charm and keeping the peace. Reading what others want and adjusting to it may be almost automatic. Its partner, the North Node in Aries, is about your own direction. If no one else had an opinion, what would you choose? And where could you act on that choice without waiting for everyone to agree?
Scorpio
North Node in Scorpio
A North Node in Scorpio invites depth, honesty and change. If comfort and routine are your default, the less familiar territory lies beneath the surface: difficult emotions, shared commitments, hidden motives including your own. Letting someone close enough to affect you is part of it. Notice where you hold on for safety, and what you might be ready to release.
South Node in Scorpio
Intensity comes naturally to a South Node in Scorpio, as does an instinct for what lies under the surface. Crisis, secrecy and emotional extremes may be territory you know well and handle capably. With the North Node in Taurus, the reflection is about simplicity. What would it be like to enjoy calm, trust the ordinary, and take pleasure in things that don't need to be deep?
Sagittarius
North Node in Sagittarius
North Node in Sagittarius points toward meaning, exploration and belief. If you tend to collect information without settling on a view, growth may come from choosing a direction, studying one subject in depth, traveling, or trusting your own philosophy. Notice how often you reach for “it depends.” Try saying what you think and standing by it for a while.
South Node in Sagittarius
A South Node in Sagittarius suggests ease with big ideas, strong convictions and adventure. Having an answer, a belief or a next destination ready may feel natural. The North Node in Gemini brings the focus back to the near and the small: listening closely, asking questions without assuming the answer, and getting curious about the people right next to you.
Capricorn
North Node in Capricorn
A North Node in Capricorn leans toward structure, ambition and responsibility. If home and emotional safety have been the center of your world, the work may involve setting long-range goals, accepting a public role and trusting yourself to lead. Discipline becomes a form of self-respect. Choose one goal that takes years and name a first step that other people can see.
South Node in Capricorn
A South Node in Capricorn brings old skills in discipline, planning and carrying authority. Being the responsible one who keeps everything running may feel like your default role. Its counterpart, the North Node in Cancer, looks inward. What do you feel, apart from what you should do? Where could you let others look after you, and make more room for home and softness?
Aquarius
North Node in Aquarius
North Node in Aquarius looks beyond the self, to community, friendship and shared ideas. If being the special one feels natural, the newer skill is collaboration: sharing credit and putting your effort into a group goal. Your individuality still counts; what changes is what it serves. Look for a team, club or cause where you can be one useful voice.
South Node in Aquarius
A South Node in Aquarius suggests familiar strengths in independence, objectivity and seeing the big picture. Standing back and staying a little detached may be comfortable territory. The North Node in Leo makes the reflection personal. Where could you express your own feelings, take credit for your work, play without a purpose, or let yourself be seen as an individual rather than part of the crowd?
Pisces
North Node in Pisces
A North Node in Pisces encourages trust, imagination and compassion. If analysis and control come easily, growth may involve letting go of fixing everything, living with some uncertainty and making space for imagination or a spiritual practice. Not every problem needs a plan. Try one regular habit with no measurable purpose and see what it gives you.
South Node in Pisces
Sensitivity and empathy run deep with a South Node in Pisces, along with an ease with the unseen. Absorbing other people's feelings, slipping into imagination or going with the flow may be long-standing habits. The North Node in Virgo asks about grounding. Where could routines, clear boundaries and practical help turn your compassion into something steady and concrete?
