Your Venus sign is the zodiac sign Venus was in when you were born. Astrology reads it for what you're drawn to: the people you warm to, how you show affection, the songs you keep replaying.

Venus stays close to the Sun, so your Venus sign is your Sun sign or one or two signs to either side of it. We checked that against every day from 1900 to 2099. The calculation runs in your browser, and your birth details aren't sent to our server.

How to use the Venus sign calculator

  1. Enter your date of birth.
  2. Type your birth town or city so the right time zone is applied.
  3. Add your birth time if you have it. If not, leave it blank and local noon is used.
  4. Calculate to see your Venus sign, its degree and, with a time, its house.
  5. Open your full birth chart from the result, or save the printable PDF report.

What a Venus sign is

In astrology, Venus stands for attraction, pleasure and what you value. Your Venus sign colors all three: the company you seek out, how you like to be looked after on a bad day, whether a handwritten note means more to you than an afternoon of someone's full attention.

Each sign gives Venus a different temperament. Venus in Taurus is traditionally described as loyal and slow to change its mind about people. Venus in Scorpio is read as intense and private, hard to win over and hard to shake off once it has decided. These are long-standing descriptions, not rules, and plenty of people recognize only parts of theirs.

Why your Venus sign is close to your Sun sign

Venus orbits inside Earth's orbit, so from here it never appears far from the Sun. Astronomers put its greatest elongation at about 47 degrees. We ran our ephemeris for every day from 1900 to 2099, and the widest gap we found was 47.3 degrees. To land three signs away from the Sun's sign, Venus would have to be more than 60 degrees from the Sun, so that never happens.

Across those 73,000 or so days, Venus shared the Sun's sign 23.6% of the time. On 58.5% of days it sat one sign away, and on 17.9% it was two signs away. Three or more signs away: not once.

So a Leo can have Venus in Leo, in Cancer or Virgo next door, or less often in Gemini or Libra. A calculator that gives a Leo Sun with Venus in Scorpio has made a mistake.

Do you need a birth time?

For the sign, usually not. Venus moves about a degree a day, and one pass through a sign lasts 24 to 32 days in most cases, with a median of 25. On most dates the hour you were born makes no difference.

The exception is a day when Venus changed sign. Then your birth time decides which side of the line you land on. The calculator accounts for this, and with no time entered it uses local noon. To see whether your date is one of these, run it once at 12:01 a.m. and once at 11:59 p.m. Same sign both times, and the hour doesn't matter for your Venus.

The house is different. It depends on which part of the zodiac was rising over the horizon at your birthplace, and that cycles through all twelve signs in about a day. Without a time you get the sign and degree only.

Venus retrograde at birth

Venus was retrograde on 7.2% of days in our 200-year run. Retrograde is a matter of viewing angle. About every 19 months Venus, on its faster inner orbit, passes between Earth and the Sun, and for roughly six weeks it appears to drift backward against the stars.

Astrologers usually read a retrograde Venus as turned inward. The sign's traits still apply but show up more slowly or privately, in someone who takes years to settle on a personal style, or who keeps going back to old friends. Some people recognize this in themselves. Plenty don't.

Retrograde stretches are also when Venus lingers. Around a retrograde it can stay in one sign for up to about four months, 126 days at most in our data, so two people born three months apart can still share a Venus sign.

How people use their Venus sign

The usual way to read a Venus sign is as a mirror, not a forecast. Learning that Venus in Virgo is described as showing care through practical help might explain why you'd rather spend an afternoon assembling a friend's bookshelf than pick out a present for them.

Taste is the other big use. Astrology links Venus in Libra with proportion and good design, Venus in Sagittarius with travel, Venus in Leo with color and showmanship. People hold those notes up against their wardrobe, their playlists and how they spend a free Saturday, and keep what fits.

Friends and couples compare Venus signs too, mostly as a conversation starter. A matching pair doesn't decide whether two people get along, and no chart can promise that. What it can do is give you words for a difference you'd already noticed, like one of you wanting a big night out and the other a quiet dinner.

Why another site might give a different Venus sign

Time zones are a common culprit. Daylight saving dates have shifted over the decades and some places have changed zones altogether, so a careless site can be off by an hour or more. That only matters on a day Venus changed sign, but on that day it decides the answer.

Missing birth times are another. One site assumes midnight, another noon, and if Venus changed sign that morning the two disagree.

Then there's the zodiac itself. We use the tropical zodiac, the standard in Western astrology. The sidereal zodiac used in Vedic astrology is tied to the stars and currently runs about 24 degrees behind, so a sidereal site will often put your Venus one sign earlier.

Frequently asked questions

What is my Venus sign?

The sign Venus was passing through at the moment you were born. Put your birth date and place into the calculator above and you'll get the sign plus its exact degree. A birth time is optional. Venus spends the whole day in a single sign on most dates, and if you skip the time, noon local time is used.

What does my Venus sign say about me?

In astrology, Venus covers what you find attractive and how you show you care, from the people you pick to the clothes and music you like. Each sign shades that differently. Venus in Gemini is described as curious and chatty, Venus in Capricorn as patient and serious about commitment. The reading is something to test against your own life, not a verdict on it.

What's the difference between a Venus sign and a Sun sign?

Your Sun sign comes from your birth date and is the one in horoscope columns. Astrology treats it as your core identity. Your Venus sign is read more narrowly, as your taste, your values and the way you give affection. Because the two planets travel near each other, roughly one birthday in four has the same sign for both, and they're never more than two signs apart.

Which Venus signs are possible with my Sun sign?

Five at most: your Sun sign and the two on each side of it. A Pisces can have Venus in Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces, Aries or Taurus. Where your birthday falls inside your Sun sign narrows it further. If you were born in the first week of Pisces, Taurus is out of reach. In the last week, Capricorn is.

Does my Venus sign ever change?

No. It's fixed at the moment of birth, like your Sun sign. Venus itself keeps moving, and astrologers track where it is now as a transit, but that doesn't rewrite your birth chart. What can shift is how well the description fits as your tastes change over the years.

What does it mean if Venus was retrograde when I was born?

It means that, seen from Earth, Venus appeared to be moving backward through the zodiac on the day you were born. Roughly one birthday in fourteen has it. Astrologers don't count it as an unlucky placement. They describe a Venus that takes longer to work out what it likes, and many people born with one notice nothing unusual at all.

Why does another website show a different Venus sign?

Start with the zodiac. A sidereal (Vedic) site measures against the stars and will often land one sign earlier than a tropical site like ours. If both are tropical, your birthday is probably one of the days Venus changed sign, and the two sites assumed different birth times or treated your birthplace's time zone or daylight saving differently.

Is the calculator free and private?

Yes. There's no account or email to give. The math happens in your browser, not on our server, so your birth date, time and place stay on your device. From the result you can open your full birth chart, with the rest of your planets placed too, or save a printable PDF report of the whole chart.

Venus in each sign

Venus in Aries

Tradition has always found Venus a little uneasy in Aries. The planet of harmony lands in the sign Mars rules, and astrology reads the result as affection with no padding on it. You tell a friend their new haircut works the second you see it. A loud, clear no sits better with you than a polite maybe. When someone you care about is in a jam, you turn up in person with your sleeves already rolled, before they've finished explaining the problem. A bit of rivalry feels like flirting, and losing at pool to someone you like mostly makes you want a rematch.

Your taste runs hot and a little rough: sauce that makes your eyes water, the front car of the roller coaster, a hike that ends in a scramble over loose rock. New beats familiar, so you'd rather try the place that opened last week than go back to the one you already know is good. Astrologers usually flag the flip side. A good argument gives you the same rush as a good date, so a calm, settled stretch with someone can start to feel like boredom.

Venus in Taurus

Venus is at home in Taurus, one of the two signs it rules, and astrology reads it here as patient, physical and loyal. You warm up slowly. Someone's voice, the way they smell, how steady their hands are, all of that registers long before anything clever they say.

Once you've chosen a person, you show it by repeating yourself. The same Thursday night kept free for them for years. A hand on their back in a crowded room. The best tomato from your garden, set aside without comment.

Pleasure comes through touch and time. A heavy ceramic mug that holds heat, a cast-iron pan older than some of your friends, a record played start to finish on decent speakers. That patience has a stubborn side. Routines, grudges, a sweater with holes in both elbows: once something is yours, letting go feels like a loss, even after it has stopped doing anything for you.

Venus in Gemini

Picture a date that was meant to be one coffee and turned into a three-hour walk across town because neither of you could stop asking questions. That's the attraction astrology links with Venus in Gemini, where curiosity is the spark. You notice the person who asks a follow-up question, who can get from bird names to tax law without losing the thread. And you show affection the same way, by paying close attention. You'll bring up something they mentioned in passing a month ago, teach them a card game, or hand over the novel you just finished with your notes still in the margins.

All that ease with words cuts both ways. Chatting about almost anything comes so easily that it's oddly simple to chat around the one feeling that needs saying plainly.

Variety looks beautiful to you. Three hobbies going at once, a language app with a ninety-day streak, a ticket to an open-mic comedy night. Your interests jump, and your spending jumps right along with them.

Venus in Cancer

Somewhere in your closet there's a box of old birthday cards, a pressed corsage and a photo strip from a mall booth, and you know exactly which shelf it's on. Astrology reads Venus in Cancer as sentimental and protective, the placement that treats memory as worth guarding. Safety comes before sparks. Someone who is gentle with their grandmother, or waits on the step until you're safely inside, gets further with you than someone dazzling.

Affection, for you, looks like looking after. You carry a spare phone charger for the friend whose battery is always dying. You know which date on the calendar is a hard one for someone, and you make a point of being around that day. At home you want lamps instead of overhead lights and the armchair the whole family has fallen asleep in at least once.

Hurt sends you inward. You go quiet and wait to be noticed, and astrologers often describe this placement as hoping to be understood without having to ask.

Venus in Leo

You love out loud. Astrology gives Venus in Leo a reputation for warmth and big gestures, which might look like a handmade sign at a friend's finish line, a toast you wrote out the night before, or a surprise party planned behind their back for weeks. People who shine a little and dress like they mean it get your attention, and once you've chosen them your loyalty is on full display.

You like being proud of the people you love, and you'd like them to be a bit proud of you too. That second wish is harder to admit. Pride gets in the way of asking for reassurance, so you wait for applause. A gesture that goes unnoticed stings more than you let on. Your taste is generous and a touch theatrical: gold jewelry, oversized sunglasses, a celebration that spills into a whole weekend.

Venus in Virgo

A wobbly table leg at a friend's place gets a folded coaster under it before anyone else has noticed, and that small fix says more about Venus in Virgo than a speech would. Older astrology texts treat this as a difficult spot: Venus loves ease, and Virgo notices every flaw. In practice it turns affection into usefulness. You proofread a friend's cover letter, label the boxes before their move, and remember they hate highway driving, so you offer to take the wheel. The people who catch your eye are the competent, quietly kind ones.

Your idea of beautiful is anything that works properly. A drawer where every utensil has its place, a plain white shirt that fits exactly, a sharp pencil, a spreadsheet that does what you built it to do. You research a purchase for weeks and enjoy every minute.

The eye for flaws doesn't switch off, though. It can slide into fixing people who didn't ask, and it can make being looked after, without rushing to even things out, strangely uncomfortable.

Venus in Libra

At a dinner party you're the one who notices who hasn't said a word and finds a way to bring them in. You remember which friend hates sitting with their back to the door. Venus rules Libra, and astrologers count this among its strongest placements, a Venus whose signature is grace in company. Attraction starts with how someone carries themselves: decent manners, an outfit chosen with care, the way they treat a waiter. Rudeness cools you faster than almost anything.

Your eye goes straight to proportion. You'll move a picture frame half an inch three times before the wall looks right. Fresh flowers, good glassware and a train ticket to see one painting in person all count, for you, as money well spent.

This Venus is usually read as wanting peace so badly that it agrees to the restaurant, the weekend plan and the paint color, then quietly resents all three. In many readings, the balance Libra is known for holds up better when your own opinion is one of the weights on the scale.

Venus in Scorpio

Talking to you for the first time can feel like a very warm interrogation. You want to know what someone was like at fourteen, why they left their last city, what they never bring up. Tradition ranks Scorpio among the hardest signs for Venus. A planet that prefers things light is placed in a sign that takes everything seriously. What comes out is affection as proof of trust. You keep a secret for a decade. You sit up until three in the morning with a friend on the worst night of their year and never mention it afterward. You know exactly which subjects to steer around after someone's breakup.

Because closeness matters so much, this Venus is often described as testing people, holding back to see who stays and who gets tired of waiting.

The luxuries you go for are dark and dense. Bitter chocolate, perfume that stays in a room after you've left it, a leather jacket that looks better the more it has been through. You'd rather dig through an estate sale for something with a story than walk into a department store.

Venus in Sagittarius

Someone with strong opinions about a country you've never visited can hold your attention for a whole evening. In astrology, Venus in Sagittarius falls for range: people who read widely, laugh at their own mistakes and say yes to a weekend somewhere they can't pronounce. You show affection by bringing people along. You book the campsite and work out the rest on the way, or talk a friend into a salsa class neither of you can manage. A passport stamp beats a new couch, and what you do buy gets used hard, like a tent that has been rained on in four countries. Your style is relaxed and a little worldly, a scarf from a Lisbon market over old jeans. Honesty is part of how you flirt, and it can land as carelessness. The same love of open roads can make an ordinary Tuesday with one person feel like a locked door. Astrologers picture this Venus at its happiest when staying is something it chose, not something it owes.

Venus in Capricorn

It can take people months to realize you like them. Venus in Capricorn is read as cautious with feelings, wanting to be sure before anything is said out loud, so your affection shows up as competence first. You give up a Sunday to help someone get a grant application in before the deadline. When a landlord stalls on a deposit, you're the one who writes the firm, polite email. You put a friend's name forward when a job opens up and never mention you did.

Reliability is what you find attractive. Someone who keeps their word and turns up on time beats someone who is merely exciting. Classic and built to last describes most of what you own: a dark wool suit you've had altered twice, an oak desk, a fountain pen you save for signatures. When you do spend on yourself, it's quiet status, the briefcase you expect to still be carrying at fifty.

The promotion, the bigger apartment, the perfect moment to say something: you'll wait for all of them, while small favors do your talking for you and the person you're doing them for may never connect the dots.

Venus in Aquarius

Most of the people you've fallen for were friends first, sometimes for years. Venus in Aquarius is traditionally linked with friendship, and astrology reads it as needing respect and room to breathe before romance can start. Odd people who don't apologize for it catch your interest, like the coworker who keeps bees on a city roof or the neighbor with a well-argued unpopular opinion. Affection from you looks like acceptance. You'd sooner introduce a friend to three other people with the same strange hobby than talk them out of it.

Close up, things get harder. A whole room gets your warmth, while the one person sitting across from you can get something cooler. If a conversation turns emotional, you reach for theory, when what they wanted was to hear that you missed them.

Anything everyone else is buying loses its appeal fast. A telescope set up on the fire escape, a houseplant nobody can identify, a keyboard you built from parts. You'll happily pay for a makerspace membership, a lecture on something obscure, or a crowdfunding campaign for a gadget that may never ship.

Venus in Pisces

You cry at the end of films you didn't even like, and you've given money to a stranger whose story you only half believed. Tradition says Venus is at its best in Pisces, its most generous and least guarded placement. Your affection works by tuning in. You hear the change in someone's voice before they've admitted anything is wrong, and you'll sit with them in silence rather than rush to cheer them up.

Atmosphere is what moves you: a song in a language you don't speak, a watercolor with bleeding edges, the blue light just before the streetlights come on, a beach in the off-season. You'd rather a gift felt like something than looked expensive.

Imagination drives attraction here, and that's where it gets tangled. You can fall for who someone could be, write the rest of them in your head, and stay long after the real version has shown up. Astrologers usually name boundaries as the work for this Venus, the line between kindness and disappearing into someone else's needs.
