Saturn takes about 29.5 years to circle the zodiac. When it gets back to the exact spot it held on the day you were born, astrologers call that your Saturn return. Anyone who lives into their late fifties has two, and a few people see a third.

The calculator shows the exact date of each return, plus the longer stretch when Saturn sits in the sign it occupied at your birth. It runs in your browser, so your birth details are not sent to our server and there is nothing to sign up for.

How to use the Saturn return calculator

  1. Enter your date of birth.
  2. Choose your birthplace so the dates use the right time zone.
  3. Add your birth time if you know it. Leaving it blank barely changes the results.
  4. Run the calculator to see every return, each exact pass, and your age on that day.
  5. Check the sign window under each return for the longer stretch around those dates.

What a Saturn return is

Your birth chart is a snapshot of where the planets were when you were born. Saturn's spot in it is a sign and a degree, say 14 degrees of Capricorn. Saturn keeps moving after that, slowly enough that it needs nearly three decades to come back around to 14 degrees of Capricorn. That arrival is your Saturn return.

In astrology Saturn stands for time, rules, limits, and the commitments you keep, so its return is read as a checkpoint for those parts of life. The first arrives at the end of your twenties, and the others follow just under thirty years apart.

When it happens, and why people say 27 to 30

We ran about 290 birth dates from 1920 to 2010 through the same ephemeris this calculator uses. The first exact Saturn return came between ages 28.4 and 29.9, with a median of 29.2. That is a narrower band than the "27 to 30" quoted so widely.

That popular range usually describes something longer: the whole stretch Saturn spends in the sign it occupied when you were born. Around the first return this lasted 2.1 to 3.0 years in our sample, 2.9 at the median. Your exact pass sits somewhere inside it.

Where it sits depends on your birth degree. With Saturn late in its sign, most of the stretch comes before the exact pass. With Saturn early in its sign, the exact pass comes soon after Saturn arrives and most of the stretch follows.

Why there can be one exact date or three

For about four and a half months each year, Saturn appears from Earth to stop and drift backward. This is retrograde motion. Saturn itself never reverses; Earth, on a faster inner orbit, overtakes it, and from here that looks like a slip backward.

If one of those backward loops falls across your birth degree, Saturn crosses that degree three times: forward, backward, then forward again. If the loop misses, it crosses once. In our sample 35% of first returns had three exact passes and the rest had one. For second returns, three passes came up 58% of the time.

Three passes span about 8 to 9 months from first to last. Each one gets its own line in the results, marked direct or retrograde, with your age on that day.

The second and third Saturn return

Your second return comes in your late fifties. In our measurements its first exact pass fell between ages 58.2 and 59.0, a tighter spread than the first return, and the median was 58.6. Three passes are also more common this time than at the first return.

Astrologers usually read it as the same checkpoint seen from further along: questions much like the ones at 29, with three decades of answers to look back on.

A third return came between ages 87.3 and 88.8 in our sample, median 88.1. Fewer people reach it, and the calculator includes it anyway, which is handy for a grandparent's chart.

How astrologers usually read the period

Online, the Saturn return gets called a crisis a lot. Astrologers who work with it closely tend to describe something calmer: a period people commonly use to take stock. Saturn is linked with responsibility, structure, and time, so the return is read as a moment to look at the commitments you have taken on and ask which ones you would choose again.

In real life it looks ordinary. Someone signing a lease renewal notices they have no wish to stay in the city. Someone else realizes they've been putting off the same decision for three years, or that a routine set up at 22 no longer fits. Astrology reads moments like these as Saturn themes: the gap between how your life is arranged and how you would like it arranged.

None of this is a forecast. Astrologers use the timing as a prompt for reflection, and plenty of people pass through their return without anything dramatic happening.

Why another site might give different dates

In most cases the other site is answering a different question. Some give the sign window, the two to three years Saturn passes through the sign it held at your birth, and call that your Saturn return. Others give the exact pass. We show both, labeled separately.

A one-day gap usually comes from time zones. An exact pass happens at a single instant, and that instant can land on different calendar dates depending on whether a site shows it in UTC or in local time.

Sidereal astrology, used in Vedic practice, measures signs against the stars instead of the seasons. Its signs sit about 24 degrees from the tropical signs used here, so a sidereal sign window can shift by months, in some charts by close to two years. Exact passes move far less, typically days or a few weeks, because the gap between the two zodiacs widens only slowly, by about one degree every 72 years.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a Saturn return last?

It depends on the definition. An exact pass is a single moment, so it falls on one date. With three passes, the first and last land roughly eight or nine months apart. The sign window, which is what most articles mean, runs two to three years. Some astrologers also count the months Saturn spends within a few degrees of your birth position.

Can my Saturn return start at 27?

The sign window can. If your Saturn sits late in its sign, Saturn enters that sign well before the exact pass, as much as two or three years earlier, so the window can open in your mid to late twenties. The exact pass is another matter. In our sample, none came before age 28.4. The results list both, so you can see which one a 27 refers to.

Do I need my exact birth time?

No. Saturn covers only a few minutes of arc in a day, so the hour you were born makes very little difference to its position, and a date and place are enough. The exception is a birth degree right next to a point where Saturn turns retrograde or direct. Saturn is nearly standing still there, so a tiny difference in position can move a pass by days, or decide whether you get one pass or three.

What does a retrograde pass mean?

Saturn was moving backward, as seen from Earth, when it crossed your birth degree. In a three-pass return the middle pass is always the retrograde one. In the usual astrological reading it revisits whatever came up at the first pass, and the final direct pass is where things settle. The calculator itself only reports the direction.

Should I be worried about my Saturn return?

Astrologers who work with the return mostly treat it as a checkpoint, not a threat. Crisis stories travel well online, and the late twenties are a busy stretch for moves, job changes, and big commitments with or without Saturn. When a hard year overlaps the return, it gets remembered as the Saturn return. Quiet returns rarely get written up.

Is a Saturn return the same as Saturn in my sun sign?

No, though the two get mixed up a lot. The return is Saturn coming back to its own birth position. Saturn moving through your sun sign is a separate transit with its own timing. If you were born with Saturn in Leo and the sun in Gemini, Saturn crosses Gemini years before it gets back to Leo. This calculator tracks only the return.

Do friends born the same year share a Saturn return?

Often, for the sign window. If your Saturn sits in the same sign, the window is identical to the day, because Saturn enters and leaves a sign on the same dates for everyone. Exact passes are personal. They depend on your own birth degree, so friends born a few months apart usually get different dates, and one can get three passes while the other gets one.

Saturn return by birth Saturn sign

Saturn return with Saturn in Aries

Saturn in Aries puts the planet of patience in the sign of the quick start. Tradition ranks this among Saturn's most awkward placements, because slow discipline has to work against the urge to move right now. Astrologers read it as responsibility learned by doing. You volunteer to lead the project, say, then discover halfway through that leading also means finishing. What Saturn wants from Aries is follow-through, carrying what you start to the end on your own steam.

The return comes around 29 and again near 58, and people with Aries Saturn often spend it looking at their bursts of effort: a side project restarted three times, a certificate abandoned at the last module, the reflex of saying yes before checking the calendar. Independence gets a second look too. Some decisions you made alone because you wanted to, and some because asking for help felt slower. Astrology treats this stretch as a natural time to tell the two apart.

Saturn return with Saturn in Taurus

Astrologers associate Saturn in Taurus with slow, deliberate building. The duties that matter are physical ones: servicing the car before the warning light comes on, keeping a spare key where you can find it, learning to cook five reliable dinners instead of fifty ambitious ones. Taurus values what lasts and what you can touch. Saturn adds a wish to earn that steadiness rather than borrow it, along with a pull toward keeping a routine, a possession, or a method long after it stopped earning its place.

When Saturn reaches its birth degree, the subject is security and what you mean by the word. Some take inventory literally, going through what they own and why they kept it. Pace is on the list too: whether moving slowly has been a choice or a default. In astrological terms the return is a check on which comforts still do their job and which are simply familiar.

Saturn return with Saturn in Gemini

With Saturn in Gemini, a lot of the growing up happens in how you think and talk. The usual reading is someone who takes information seriously. You check the facts before weighing in on the group chat, keep notes on everything, and may worry more than most about sounding uninformed. Gemini loves variety, so what Saturn asks of it is focus. The half-learned language, the browser tabs open since spring, the library books renewed twice: astrologers would say this placement wants you to pick a few threads and follow them to the end.

Learning and talking are the natural subjects once Saturn is back where it started. Think of the conversations you've been putting off, the skills you've sampled and dropped, and the way you describe yourself when nobody is checking. Sometimes the focus lands on a sibling or a neighbor. Just as often it's the small habit of saying "I'll look into it" and then not looking.

Saturn return with Saturn in Cancer

Cancer is one of the signs where Saturn is considered uncomfortable, since the planet of rules and distance lands in the sign of feeling and belonging. Astrologers often read it as someone who took on adult duties at home early, or who learned to keep emotions tidy and private. Picture the person who organizes the group dinner and barely eats, or who remembers every birthday and lets their own slip by. The lesson Saturn points to is care with a closing time.

Home, in both senses of the word, tends to be the subject during the return. That can mean looking at where you live and whether it feels like a base or just an address. It can also mean family patterns, which ones to carry forward and which to set down. Emotionally, Saturn in Cancer is read as asking for a steadier way of letting people in, built slowly and on your own terms.

Saturn return with Saturn in Leo

Leo wants to be seen. Saturn wants things earned. Traditional astrology sees Saturn as ill at ease in Leo, a planet of restraint in the sign of display, and reads the pairing as a long apprenticeship in confidence. Some people born with it stay out of the spotlight, waiting until a song or a sketch or a toast is perfect before showing anyone. Others step into leadership and feel every pair of eyes in the room. Both versions take self-expression seriously, and play can start to feel like something you have to justify.

Astrologers describe the discipline here as creative practice, something you come back to on ordinary Tuesdays with or without applause. Recognition is the thread of the return: whose approval you've been working for, whether pride has helped you or boxed you in, how much room is left for fun. Children, students, and anyone who looks to you as an example can be part of it. So can the talents that have been waiting backstage for years.

Saturn return with Saturn in Virgo

Virgo is a sign of detail and usefulness, and Saturn is a planet of standards. The traditional picture is a person who takes daily work seriously, sometimes more seriously than the work deserves. Rewriting an email four times, keeping a tidy folder for receipts, spotting the typo on the menu before the food arrives: all familiar territory. The shadow side, as astrologers describe it, is an inner critic who never clocks out.

At each return, routines go on the table, including the ones kept only because stopping would feel like failing. Workload and rest come up, along with the gap between the standards you hold yourself to and what you'd accept from a friend. Astrologers often frame the work here as deciding what counts as good enough.

Saturn return with Saturn in Libra

Saturn is exalted in Libra, a traditional way of saying it works well here. Its seriousness goes into fairness. That can look like noticing when the same friend always picks the restaurant, or keeping a quiet tally of who called whom last. Maturity, as astrologers see it here, means agreements you can actually keep and plain talk about what a shared arrangement asks of each person, from chore charts to the terms of a working partnership.

Around the return, commitments get examined one at a time and sorted into the ones you chose and the ones you took on to avoid friction. A casual arrangement may have quietly become permanent, or a pattern of agreeing just to keep the peace may come into view. The question underneath is whether the terms still make sense for you as well as for the other person.

Saturn return with Saturn in Scorpio

Privacy and self-reliance are the usual themes when Saturn sits in Scorpio. Astrology reads this as a placement that handles obligations quietly. You keep your word without announcing it, and you'd rather fix a problem than discuss it. Trust is the big subject: who gets access to your plans, your passwords, your worries. The discipline is emotional, too. It looks like staying with something uncomfortable, a hard conversation or a bill you'd prefer not to open, until it's settled.

In the return years the theme is usually control. Plenty of people find a place where they've held on tightly because accepting help felt risky, or a grudge that has outlasted its reason. Joint matters surface too: shared accounts, family obligations, the question of who owns what. What Saturn in Scorpio asks for is clear, honest agreements about exactly the things that are hardest to bring up.

Saturn return with Saturn in Sagittarius

Astrologers tend to read Saturn in Sagittarius as earnest about ideas. Beliefs matter to you, and so does getting them right. It can show up as teaching or mentoring, or as being the person in the family who checks the source before forwarding an article. Saturn looks for shape in big, loose things: a personal philosophy, a long course of study, the plan to live abroad someday.

By the time Saturn comes back to its starting point, some of those plans have been talked about for years, and the return is a common time to sort them. A few people finally fill out the application or set a date for the move. A belief picked up from family or school may also stop fitting, and working out a replacement takes a while. As usually read, Saturn here asks whether your principles show up in how you spend a Saturday, and at its best it turns one idea into something concrete instead of keeping ten open.

Saturn return with Saturn in Capricorn

Capricorn is one of Saturn's two home signs, and astrology sees the planet working at full strength here. Astrologers describe someone who learned early to be reliable: the kid who finished homework before dinner without being asked, or the one relatives handed adult tasks to. Routines, long-range goals, and a clear sense of what you're building come naturally.

The traditional caution is that duty can harden into habit. The return is when many people with Saturn here look hard at the ladders they're climbing. Some confirm they still want what they've been working toward and get more deliberate about it. Others realize a goal was set by a parent, a teacher, or a first boss, and begin rewriting it in their own terms. Rest belongs in the picture too, since astrologers associate this placement with treating slowing down as optional.

Saturn return with Saturn in Aquarius

Aquarius is a home sign for Saturn in traditional astrology, alongside Capricorn (modern astrologers also link it with Uranus), and the placement is read as a talent for systems. You notice how a group runs and where its rules are unfair. Duty here is often collective: running the neighborhood cleanup, making sure the shared spreadsheet adds up. The maturity this placement aims for is being useful to a community while holding on to your own view.

The same placement can keep people at arm's length, since fixing the system is easier than saying what you personally need from it. Memberships are what get reviewed at the return: which teams, scenes, and causes still reflect what you believe, and which you stay in out of loyalty to an earlier version of yourself.

Some people step back from a group they've outgrown. Others step forward and take on a formal role they'd been filling informally for years. Both moves come from deciding where you belong by choice.

Saturn return with Saturn in Pisces

Pisces has no edges, and Saturn is the planet of edges. Astrologers usually describe this pairing as learning to frame things that resist a frame: feelings, imagination, the urge to help everyone who asks. Friends may call you at midnight because you always pick up, and the line between your mood and the room's can blur. The aim, as astrology sees it, is compassion that doesn't drain you.

The structure Saturn asks for here is small and practical. A cutoff time for answering messages. One evening a week kept for the music or drawing you've meant to get back to. As the return plays out, people commonly notice where they've been drifting and where other people's needs have stretched them thin, and start sorting out which kinds of care can last.
