Once a year the Sun comes back to the exact degree and minute it held when you were born. A solar return chart is a chart of the sky for that moment, set for the place where you are when it happens. Astrologers use it as a snapshot of the year that runs from one birthday to the next.

The calculator finds that moment for the year you choose, shows its local date and time, and draws the chart. There is no sign-up and no email field.

How to use the solar return chart calculator

  1. Enter your date, time and place of birth, or mark the time as unknown.
  2. Choose the year of the solar return you want to see.
  3. Enter the town where you'll spend that birthday. If you're staying home, that's the town you live in.
  4. Check the local date and time of the return, then read the rising sign, the house the Sun falls in, and the Moon.

What is a solar return?

Over a year the Sun appears to travel once around the ecliptic, the path along which the zodiac signs are measured. Your solar return is the instant it reaches the exact longitude it had at your birth. By then the Moon and planets have moved on, so the return chart keeps one thing from your birth chart, the Sun's exact position, and everything else is new.

The chart is read for the twelve months until the next return. Many people look at it shortly before their birthday, as a prompt for thinking about the year ahead.

Why the return isn't always on your birthday

A calendar year has 365 days, but the Sun takes nearly 365 and a quarter days to come back to the same point. So your return arrives a little under six hours later on the clock each year, and when a leap day falls in between, it comes about 18 hours earlier instead. Over the four-year cycle it can land on the day before your birthday, the day itself or occasionally the day after.

Time zones add another layer. The return happens at one instant everywhere on Earth, but the date on the clock depends on where you are. A return at 1 a.m. on your birthday in London falls at 8 p.m. the evening before in New York.

Why the place changes the houses

At the return moment the Sun, Moon and planets sit in the same signs and degrees wherever you are. What changes with location is the rising sign, the Midheaven and the houses, because those depend on which part of the sky is on your horizon. Spend your birthday in Sydney instead of London, and the same instant gives a different rising sign and moves the planets into different houses.

The common approach is to cast the chart for wherever you are at the return moment. For most people that is home, which often isn't where they were born. That is why the calculator asks for a second place. If you travel for your birthday, enter where you'll actually be.

How to read your solar return chart

Start with the return Ascendant, the sign rising at the return moment. Astrologers usually read it as the tone of the year: the pace and manner you fall into when you take things on.

Next, find the house the Sun falls in. The Sun's sign and degree are always the same as in your birth chart, so the house is the part that changes from year to year. It points to the area of life where your attention and energy tend to go over these twelve months, such as home, work, friendships or study.

Then look at the Moon, by sign and by house. It moves fast and differs a lot from year to year. It is usually read as what you need in order to feel settled during the year. After those three, set the whole return chart beside your birth chart and see which themes turn up in both.

If you don't know your birth time

Without a birth time, your natal Sun is taken at local noon. The Sun moves about one degree a day, so that noon position can be up to half a degree off, and the return moment can shift by as much as half a day either way. In half a day the rising sign moves through roughly half the zodiac, so the return Ascendant and houses can't be pinned down. Treat them as unknown.

The planets barely move in half a day, so their signs stay useful. The Moon is the exception: it covers six or seven degrees in half a day, so if it sits near the edge of a sign, it could belong to the neighboring one.

Your privacy

No sign-up, no email address, no account. We never send your birth date and time to our servers. The return moment and the chart are calculated by code running in this page.

If you save a chart, it is stored in this browser on this device only, and we never see it. To look up your birthplace or birthday location, the page downloads a small list of towns matching the first letters you type. That request contains no part of your date or time of birth.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use where I live instead of where I was born?

Yes, and for most people that is the usual choice. A solar return is normally cast for wherever you are at the return moment, which is usually home. Some astrologers use the birthplace every year instead. The planets come out the same either way, and only the rising sign and houses change, so you can try both and compare.

Why is my solar return a day before my birthday?

Because the Sun's yearly cycle is about a quarter of a day longer than a 365-day calendar year. Your return drifts almost six hours later each year and moves back after each leap day, so it wanders across your birthday and the days on either side. The local date also depends on your time zone. A return on the day before or after your birthday is normal.

Does the solar return chart predict the year?

We don't use it that way. A solar return chart is a framework for reflection. It suggests themes to think about for the year from one birthday to the next, such as where your attention tends to go and what helps you feel settled. What actually happens depends on you and your circumstances, and nothing on this site forecasts events.

Should I travel to get a different solar return chart?

Some astrologers suggest it, picking a birthday location where the return chart has a rising sign or house placement they like. Whether that makes any difference is a matter of belief, and we make no claim either way. If you're curious, enter a few places and compare. The planets stay put and only the houses move.

How accurate does my birth time need to be?

As accurate as you can get it. An error of one hour in your birth time moves the return moment by about an hour, which can be enough to change the return rising sign. Without any birth time, the return can be off by up to half a day, so treat the rising sign and houses as unknown.

How long does a solar return chart apply?

From the moment of one return until the next, so roughly from one birthday to the next. Each year has its own chart. Last year's and next year's are easy to look up here by changing the year.

Can I save my chart?

Yes, in this browser on this device. Saved charts aren't uploaded, and we never see them. To move them to another device, export them to a file and import that file there. Clearing your browser's site data deletes saved charts, so keep an exported copy if you want a backup.

You may act first and plan on the way, agree to things before the details are clear, and run short of patience with long waits. It suits taking the first step on something you have been putting off. The question to keep in view is which of your quick starts deserve the slower work of finishing.

Taurus rising

Taurus rising in your solar return

A Taurus Ascendant in the return chart is read as a slower, steadier pace for the year. You may prefer doing fewer things properly, keeping routines that work, and paying attention to comfort, money and your physical surroundings. Pushing hard for quick results can feel less natural than usual. It suits building something gradually and looking after what you already have. Notice when steadiness turns into simply not wanting anything to change.

Gemini rising

Gemini rising in your solar return

Gemini rising on the return chart tends to fill the year with conversation, messages and short errands. You may handle things by asking around, reading up and keeping several projects open at once. Every so often, check which of the many threads you are holding actually matter to you.

Cancer rising

Cancer rising in your solar return

It suits putting care into your living space and close ties. Ask yourself where you want shelter and where you are only avoiding risk.

Leo rising

Leo rising in your solar return

A Leo Ascendant in the return chart points to a more visible, expressive tone for the year. You may want to put your own mark on things, take the lead when nobody else does, and make room for play and creative work. Being noticed can matter more than usual, which is worth admitting to yourself. It suits sharing something you made with other people. Watch for moments when performing starts to replace simply enjoying it.

Virgo rising

Virgo rising in your solar return

With Virgo rising on your solar return, the year tends toward the practical: sorting, fixing, improving routines and getting details right. You may take things one step at a time and feel best when you can see progress on a list. Work methods and daily schedules can take up more of your attention than big plans. It suits learning a skill properly. Keep an eye on how often "not ready yet" becomes a reason to wait.

Libra rising

Libra rising in your solar return

You may work things out alongside other people, weigh options carefully, and pay attention to fairness and to how things look. Partnerships of every kind can shape how you go about your plans. It suits negotiating, collaborating and easing old frictions. The thing to watch is putting off your own decisions while you wait for everyone else to agree.

Scorpio rising

Scorpio rising in your solar return

You may prefer going deep on a few things to skimming many, keeping plans private until they are ready, and asking harder questions of yourself and others. Trust and shared commitments can become central. It suits finishing what needs finishing and releasing what doesn't. Notice when privacy protects you and when it keeps help away.

Sagittarius rising

Sagittarius rising in your solar return

A Sagittarius Ascendant in the return chart tends to give the year an open, wide-angle feel. You may want room to move, whether that means travel, study, new ideas or simply a bigger view of your own life. Plans tend to get made on enthusiasm and revised often. It suits saying yes to unfamiliar places and subjects. The counterweight is follow-through, so choose one or two things you mean to see to the end.

Capricorn rising

Capricorn rising in your solar return

With Capricorn rising in your solar return, the year tends to take on a serious, structured tone. You may set longer-range goals, accept more responsibility, and measure progress in concrete terms. Things can seem to move slowly, and patience becomes part of the method. It suits planning, building and putting steady effort into your work or reputation. Leave room for rest, since a year organized around duty can forget to include it.

Aquarius rising

Aquarius rising in your solar return

An Aquarius Ascendant in the return chart is often read as an independent, experimental tone for the year. You may want to do things your own way, question routines, and spend more time with friends, groups or causes than usual. Unusual ideas can appeal more than tried methods. It suits testing a new approach to an old problem. Keep in mind that distance protects your judgment but can also leave people unsure where they stand with you.

Pisces rising

You may rely more on intuition than on plans, drift toward art, music, rest or quiet time, and pick up other people's moods easily. Clear goals can be harder to hold on to. It suits creative work, care for others and time alone. Simple routines and plain boundaries can help you keep your own shape through the year.

The solar return Sun in each house

1st house

Return Sun in the 1st house

With the return Sun in the 1st house, the focus of the year tends to land on you: how you look, how you spend your energy, and how you introduce yourself to people. Many people treat it as a personal fresh start, a year for making decisions on their own terms and timetable. How you come across may matter to you more than usual. Think about which version of yourself you would like to practice being this year.

2nd house

Return Sun in the 2nd house

With a 2nd house return Sun, attention tends to go to resources: money, possessions, the skills you earn with, and what you value. You may spend more time than usual working out what security means to you and what you are willing to work for. This describes priorities, not income. One useful exercise is to list what you actually spend time and money on, then compare it with what you say matters most.

3rd house

Return Sun in the 3rd house

With the Sun in the 3rd house of the return chart, everyday communication tends to take up much of the year: writing, messages, short trips, neighbors and siblings. Learning in short stretches suits this placement, whether through a course, a new language or simply reading more. Your local area can matter more than usual. Pay attention to the conversations you keep having, and to what they are really about.

4th house

Return Sun in the 4th house

The 4th house covers home and roots, and a return Sun here is read as turning your energy inward. Your living space, family relationships and private life may claim more of your time than public goals. Some people use a year like this to move house, renovate or simply settle in, while others spend it mending family ties. Ask what would make home feel like a base you return to with relief.

5th house

Return Sun in the 5th house

A return Sun in the 5th house suggests putting your energy into pleasure and self-expression: creative projects, hobbies, romance, children and play. It can be a year to make things for their own sake and to take your enjoyment seriously. You may also want more recognition for what you make, and that is worth noticing. A question to keep handy: what would you do this year if nobody were grading it?

6th house

Return Sun in the 6th house

With the Sun in the 6th house of your solar return, the year tends to center on daily routines: work habits, schedules, chores, and how you look after yourself from day to day. Improving one system at a time can be satisfying. Your workload and the people you work alongside may take more attention than big ambitions do. Look at an ordinary week and pick one routine you would like to change.

7th house

Return Sun in the 7th house

A 7th house return Sun is usually read as putting partnerships at the center of the year. Close relationships, business partners and collaborators, and sometimes open disagreements, may take much of your energy. You may learn more about yourself through other people than on your own. It is a year that suits working on how you share decisions. Ask which relationships feel balanced, and what you could adjust in the ones that don't.

8th house

Return Sun in the 8th house

With the Sun in the 8th house of the return chart, attention tends to go toward what you share with others: joint money, debts, commitments and emotional closeness. It can be a year for facing things that usually go unspoken, and for letting go of something that has run its course. Notice where you hold on out of fear, and where trusting someone a little more might be worth it.

9th house

Return Sun in the 9th house

A 9th house return Sun tends to point the year outward, toward travel, study, belief and big questions. You may want to learn something substantial, spend time abroad, write or teach, or rethink your own philosophy. Ordinary routines can feel narrow by comparison. It suits any project that widens your view. Which subject or place have you been curious about for years without ever giving it real time?

10th house

Return Sun in the 10th house

With the Sun in the 10th house of your solar return, energy tends to flow toward work, ambition and your public role. Career decisions, responsibility and how others see you professionally may fill much of the year, and you may want your effort to be seen. This describes focus, not results. Think about what you would like your work to stand for by the time your next birthday comes around.

11th house

Return Sun in the 11th house

With the Sun in the 11th house of the return chart, attention tends to go to friends, groups and shared goals. Teams, clubs, online communities and causes may take more of your time, and your plans may grow out of the people you spend time with. It suits collaborating and widening your circle. It is also a year for asking what you hope for over the longer term, and which people around you share those hopes.

12th house

Return Sun in the 12th house

With the return Sun in the 12th house, your energy tends to turn inward and away from public view. Rest, solitude, reflection, behind-the-scenes work and endings may matter more than visible progress. Some people find a year like this quiet and restoring, others find it unsettling at first. It suits finishing old business and clearing space. Protect some unscheduled time and notice what comes up in it.
